Reformed in 1989 from Rodney County and Hellensville Borough; Rodney District has become the most populated northern region in Greater Auckland. Known for many places Rodney District is home to Muriwai Beach an area famed for it's volcanic black sand which mostly originates from Mount Taranaki. Surfing is a major past time in this region. Cape Rodney in the north is home to Goat Island Marine Reserve, the first of its kind in New Zealand. Formed in 1977 it is now popular with scuba divers wishing to view the country's diverse marine wildlife. Also located in Rodney District is Kawau Island which was home to New Zealand's former governor Sir George Grey after he bought the island and spent 25 years and alot of money developing it.
